America cannot be messaged back into coherence

Yes, the crisis is narrative. The broken story is real. People no longer agree on what is happening, who can be trusted, what we owe, or whether the same country is still visible from opposite sides of the street. Narrative has to be part of the solution.

But narrative, as we mean it, is not messaging.
