Democracy is failing at its most upstream origin: participatory meaning making.
Progressive politics has spent decades on policy advocacy, electoral mobilization, and movement organizing. All three assume the underlying vocabulary still works: that words like neighbor, fair share, and the common good still arrive with the weight a previous generation built into them. That assumption no longer holds. The meaning layer that carries those words is eroding under attention markets, algorithmic distribution, and predatory narratives that arrive faster than considered ones.
ReimagineUS is built to work at that upstream layer. We do research that listens for the story already alive in a community before any outsider names it. We incubate builders who approach community as upstream from organizing, not as a resource for it. We accelerate the people and institutions innovating at the level of room formation, AI-enabled participation tools, and meaning-making public projects citizens can return to.
Authoritarian movements have spent two decades building their version of this infrastructure, learning to convert anxiety into identity, grievance into belonging, and confusion into political action. We are building the democratic version, on purpose, at the layer where citizenship itself gets formed.
Yes, the crisis is narrative. The broken story is real. People no longer agree on what is happening, who can be trusted, what we owe, or whether the same country is still visible from opposite sides of the street. Narrative has to be part of the solution.
But narrative, as we mean it, is not messaging.
Narrative is the story plus the structures that let the story become livable. It is language, but also room. Memory, but also ritual. A promise, but also the school, library, newsroom, public office, association, table, and habit that make the promise repeatable. A society cannot hold a shared story if there is nowhere for that story to be practiced, corrected, inherited, and tested against another human face.
A message cannot substitute for the school that still teaches children how to live with people unlike themselves. Or the library that lets a stranger enter without buying anything. Or the public broadcaster trusted enough to slow a rumor before it becomes the day's weather. Or the church basement, union hall, neighborhood room, firehouse, or folding table where people become familiar before they become enemies. The places where friction thrives and produces healthy disagreement, debate, engagement, learning are the building blocks of shared narratives.
The narrative crisis is usually described as a crisis of belief: bad information, bad ideology, bad arguments, bad media. All true. But underneath the belief problem is a contact problem. People are receiving more claims than ever and encountering fewer settings where those claims are corrected by shared life.
When our shared spaces thin out, ideas float free of obligation. Rumor travels without ever meeting a face in a room. Grievance hardens without passing through anyone who has to live with where it lands. People do not only lose trust in institutions. They lose the ordinary places where trust gets practiced before anyone has to make a speech about it.
Look at the countries that keep showing up near the top of the cross-national data: trust, democratic support, civic participation, public media credibility, reading habits, low loneliness, institutional confidence. The pattern is too consistent to ignore. The societies that hold together are not the ones with the best stories. They are the ones with the most surviving infrastructure for those stories to live in.
Denmark has public media, libraries, folk high schools, and association life that still reinforce one another. Finland has treated reading, libraries, and trusted public broadcasting as ordinary parts of national life. Canada has managed, imperfectly but seriously, to keep immigration mostly inside procedure rather than surrendering it fully to scapegoat politics. The Netherlands, Switzerland, Iceland, New Zealand, Ireland. Different histories. Different pressures. When the same thing keeps working across very different places, that is a clue.
America is overcharged with messages– fragmented and loud–without shared meaning across the communities we actually live in.
Local civic energy still exists. Volunteerism persists. Libraries are still used. Religious congregations still organize care. Immigrant communities still build futures out of exhaustion and hope. Neighbors shovel walks, run food drives, coach teams, sit with the dying, and do the untelevised work without which the country would already be much worse than it is.
There is still a lot of America that works because somebody remembered the key, made the coffee, opened the room, and stayed late to stack the chairs.
But the national containers that hold our shared spaces and community have worn unevenly. Local newspapers have collapsed faster than anything credible has replaced them. Public broadcasting is under siege. Civic associations that once gave millions of people repeatable roles have thinned. Trust in institutions has fallen faster than the human appetite for belonging.
America has energy. Tons of it. But too few trustworthy places to put it.
That is a dangerous combination. Energy without containers does not become democracy automatically. It becomes spectacle, backlash, grift, loneliness, fandom, private despair, or a movement built by whoever offers the easiest relief.
And somebody always offers the fastest relief.
That’s why the next era of civic imagination cannot be only a message project. It has to be a structure project.
And it’s why we’re looking for partners in that harder work.
The librarian whose building has become the only third place left in a small town. The teacher who still understands the classroom as civic rehearsal, where more is required than a raised hand and the correct date. The artistic director programming a season the audience will actually sit through together. The placemaker who treats a street or a park as a structure for memory and encounter. The organizer who has stopped writing scripts and started building encounters that survive the news cycle. The technologist building tools that send people back into rooms rather than deeper into the feed.
The forms almost certainly need to be innovated as much as renewed. The alchemy is the point. Story joined to structure. Language joined to practice. Memory joined to a place where people can return.
That is where narrative becomes infrastructure. It stops being a beautiful sentence looking for an audience and becomes a form of life people can repeat.
ReimagineUS is looking for partners who know how to open the room and keep it open. Are you that partner?
